Gender – the social construct of the different biological sexes (males and females) – is a user group which faces many different barriers in sport due to the varying needs, goals and requirements of sport. Complete the overview of the possible barriers that can affect participation in this user group, as well as the various strategies that can address each.

The stark difference between males and females in professional sport, which is amplified by the lack of equal coverage in the , means that there is a lack of positive sporting for females. There has been a push in recent years to increase the media coverage of female sport and increase the range of for women in sport, such as presenters, pundits and commentators, in order to inspire participation uptake. 
As there is a traditional male-dominated culture in sport, there are still that exist towards women, such as the erroneous view that some sports, such as rugby, are unfeminine. This may then lead to the assumption that women participating in these sports must be lesbians, due to prejudices towards sexuality. There have been initiatives and campaigns to promote female participation in sport, such as Sport England's This Girl , or the organisation Women in Sport. These have resulted in increased female participation in sport and help to  female participation in sport as the norm.
Due to the greater popularity of men's sport, sports venues are likely to prioritise facilities and the most appropriate slots for male sporting activities. There needs to be an increase in of sessions and activities for females, alongside an increase in of activities through the likes of social media. This will make it more likely that females become of activity provision and have the opportunity to participate.
