  • Mrs Lyons tells Mrs Johnstone that her work is unsatisfactory and she will have to leave. Mrs Johnstone says she will take the baby with her, but Mrs Lyons threatens her, saying that parted twins who learn the truth immediately die. 
  • The narrator questions whether superstition or social class was to blame.
  • Mrs Lyons puts a pair of new shoes on the table, which we discover is believed to bring bad luck.
  • Mrs Johnstone arrives and tells Mickey that Edward is his brother. Mickey is 'uncontrollable with rage'. He waves the gun at Edward; it goes off and Edward is killed.

    Mickey is shot dead by the policemen.

  • We see that Mickey loves Linda.

    Mickey has seen Edward at the window of his house. He wishes he could be like him.

    Edward and Mickey meet again.

  • Mrs Lyons persuades Mrs Johnstone to give one of the twins to her. Mrs Johnstone agrees, thinking that Mrs Lyons can give the baby everything he needs and more. As she works as a cleaner for Mrs Lyons, Mrs Johnstone thinks that she will see the baby every day. 
  • Edward flirts with Linda but then persuades Mickey to finally ask her out. He is leaving for university and and won't see them for three months. Mickey and Linda kiss.
  • Mickey loses his job at the factory; it is Mr Lyons who is in charge. Mickey struggles to find another job.

    Edward returns from university, where he has been having a 'fantastic' time. He argues with Mickey about the importance of having a job. Mickey says that Edward is still 'a kid' whereas he had to grow up. 

  • During the robbery, Sammy shoots someone. Sammy and Mickey are both put in prison.

    Mickey becomes depressed and is prescribed 'daily pills'. He struggles to come off the pills after he leaves prison. 

    Linda arranges for Edward, now Councillor Lyons, to give Mickey a job and arrange a house for them. 

  • Seven more years pass.
  • Mrs Lyons sees the photo of Mickey in the locket and thinks that it is Edward. She recognises Mrs Johnstone from her photo. 
  • Mrs Lyons visits Mrs Johnstone. She accuses Mrs Johnstone of following her and offers her money to move away. Mrs Lyons picks up a knife and lunges at Mrs Johnstone, saying that she has 'ruined her'. Mrs Johnstone realises that Mrs Lyons has mental ill health.
  • There is a time shift of seven years.
  • Mickey and Edward meet and discover that they were born on the same day. They decide to become 'blood brothers'.

    Mrs Johnstone finds Mickey and Edward together. She tells Edward never to come 'round here' again. 

    Mickey goes to Edward's house and Mrs Johnstone realises who he is. She tells Edward that he's 'not the same' as Mickey.

  • We learn that Mrs Johnstone's children are hungry as she can't afford to buy enough food to feed them all.

    We meet Mrs Lyons and find out that she wishes she had a child.

  • Edward and Mickey miss each other.

    Mrs Johnstone tells her family that they are moving to the country.

  • Sammy commits armed robbery on the bus. He has already been in trouble for burning down the school and will go to prison this time.

    Linda tells Mickey that she loves him.

  • Edward tells Mrs Johnstone that he is moving to the country. She gives him a locket with photos of her and Mickey in it. Edward gives Mickey a toy gun.
  • Mrs Johnstone finds out that she is pregnant with twins and worries about coping with so many children when she is already struggling.
  • Edward tells Linda that he loves her. She tells him that she has 'always' loved him 'in a way'. He asks her to marry him, but she tells him she has already married Mickey and is pregnant.

    While Edward and Linda are talking, Sammy offers Mickey money to keep watch while he robs a garage. Mickey agrees.

  • Mrs Lyons tells her husband that she wants to move house because she is 'frightened for Edward'. During the conversation, Mr Lyons puts a pair of shoes on the table and the narrator reminds us of the superstition.
  • Mickey, Linda and Edward are caught throwing stones at windows by a policeman. 

    The policeman threatens Mrs Johnstone with court. She wishes that she could 'move away and start all over again'.

    The policeman advises the Lyons not to let Edward mix with children like Mickey.

  • Linda and Edward have an affair. Mrs Lyons tells Mickey about it.

    Mickey gets a gun, which Sammy has hidden, from his mother's house. He goes to the town hall to find Edward. Mickey confronts Edward about taking Linda away from him. 

  • The narrator tells us what is going to happen.
  • Edward gets suspended from boarding school for wearing the locket Mrs Johnstone gave him.

    Linda and Mickey are both suspended from their school.

  • We find out that Linda is pregnant with Mickey's baby. Linda and Mickey get married.
