Dotted Notes
Adding a dot after a note adds half of the value of the note to itself. For example, a minim is worth 2 crotchets, so a dotted minim is worth 3 crotchets. A semibreve is worth 4 crotchets, so a dotted semibreve is worth 6 crotchets. A dotted quaver is one and a half quavers, which is equivalent to three semiquavers
In the first bar the minim takes 2 beats so there is a 2 beat rest. In the second bar the minim is dotted taking 3 beats, so there is only a 1 beat rest.

Double-dotted notes
A double-dotted note adds on half the value, and then adds on another quarter of the value. For example, a double-dotted minim adds on a crotchet and a quaver, making it worth three and a half beats.
The double-dotted minim leaves just a quaver rest left in the bar.

Dotted and double-dotted rests
