There are thousands of sports and physical activities that people participate in around the world. Some are native to certain countries or regions, like Australian Rules football or  korfballrugby leaguehurlingcapoeira in Ireland, while others are played on international scales at events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Some sports and activities are quite similar to one another, like Union and League codes of rugby, while others are completely different. Below we will cover some of the different types of sport and physical activities, and the benefits of taking part in each.

Sports 

A sport can be defined as a  competitiverelaxedrecreationalfriendly activity that involves  passive behaviourphysical exertionfoul languagecombat. Sports follow  lawlessnesscommandsrulesdisorder and regulations that are set by a  national governing banknational gaming bodynotional goals brokernational governing body (NGB), which essentially represents a particular sport within a country and oversees how it is run and developed. For example, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) oversees the running of tennis in Great Britain, with one of its many roles being the organisation of competitions at all levels of the sporting pyramid. Sports can either be competed in as a team (e.g.  boxingbadmintontriathlonhockey) or as an individual (e.g. squash).

The benefits of taking part in sports include:

  • Increase in fitness levels
  • Opportunities to meet new people - not only teammates but coaches too
  • Chance to develop leadership and teamwork skills, especially in team sports
  • Build  resilienceindifferencearousalaggression and self-confidence from success in competition

Outdoor activities

Outdoor activities are those performed in an outdoor environment or in an area of recreation and are considered  safetediouslonesomeadventurous. This may include positive risk-taking activities such as  skatingabseilingcanoeingclimbing on a body of water or  paraglidingabseilingparachutingfalling down a rock face. The benefits of taking part in outdoor activities include:
  • A rush of adrenaline which can make someone feel good afterwards and boost their  self-doubtnegative energytestosteroneself-esteem
  • Increased self-confidence from trying new things
  • Opportunities to meet new people; for example, on group expeditions
  • Chance to learn new skills, such as using a map and compass for  footballparachutingopen water swimmingorienteering
  • Time away from the stresses of everyday life and electronic devices such as TVs and mobile phones

Physical fitness activities 

Physical fitness activities are those where the primary aim is to increase  motivationfitnessself-esteemself-confidence. Physical fitness components that might be targeted through physical fitness activities include aerobic and muscular endurance, muscular strength, speed and flexibility. Physical fitness activities are often carried out at a gym as they have a range of fitness equipment available, but they may also be performed as an at-home workout or at the local green space, without the use of any equipment!

The benefits of taking part in physical fitness activities include:

  • Opportunities to meet new people such as staff and personal trainers at gyms, and even other gym users
  • Achieving goals set as part of a programme
  • Positive changes in  coordinationbody compositionbalancereaction time, by losing excess fat and gaining muscle
  • Improvements to  physicalmentalintellectualsocial health by boosting immune protection and improving symptoms of conditions such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure Increase in confidence as a result of all these changes
