has been a feature of sport since pre-industrial times, but its accessibility in purpose-built shops and now on  platforms has increased its popularity in modern times. There are now many data analysts who serve as online tipsters aiming to 'beat the odds', and this has also coincided with the increased popularity of betting amongst the general population. Other developments such as in-play betting, virtual sports, and the range of fields to choose from have increased the options available to the customer and the enjoyment associated with betting, achievable even without success. However, there are two prominent issues that take advantage of gambling and exploit it in a deviant, unethical manner.

Match  - involves an exchange of money in return for someone who holds power to bring about a certain result. Some performers, managers and even officials have been involved in this illegal activity, which is condemned by law in sport. Performers of a lower status who earn less money are viewed as  targets to bribe. For example, a finalist in the 2019 Wimbledon Championships is unlikely to take £1 million to lose the game as they will receive more than twice the amount if they win the competition. However, a lower-ranked tennis player might accept such an offer in the earlier rounds of the competition as they are less likely to win and there are  expectations from them. A famous case in sport was the Italian football scandal of 2006, when Juventus were demoted to the next division and stripped of their league title after being found guilty of using referees to manipulate match results. Horse racing is another sport which has a heavy association with match fixing.

Illegal sports betting - it is forbidden for any member of a professional sporting organisation to engage in any gambling activity on the sport they are involved in. This is a common-sense stipulation as they could potentially hold a degree of  over the outcome, having the potential to ruin the  of the sport if they decide to take part in this activity. For example, a county cricket coach would be restricted from wagering on the England team selection as they might have inside knowledge of players belonging to their county already being selected. Moreover, a golf player would not be able to place a bet on an opponent's score in a competition, regardless of whether they were also competing. A recent case in sport is Welsh Rugby Union's assistant coach Rob Howley, who was suspended for 18 months after being found guilty of placing bets, some involving the Welsh squad itself. Some countries have even gone as far as banning betting altogether, e.g. Singapore and North Korea.
