There are several different types of treatment due to the range of injuries that can occur.

Types of treatment:

  •  - Can be used for muscular injuries, such as tears and strains, by taking the joint through its range of movement. It is also an important preventive method as it improves joint flexibility, and, therefore, allows a greater range of joint motion and safe muscle length.
  • Sports  - This helps break down the scar tissue that may have formed around an injured area, reducing muscle pain and improving flexibility. It might also improve the permeability of muscles, facilitating nutrient delivery to the injured muscle and the efficiency of waste product removal following exercise.
  • - Providing clients with exercise programmes and mobility tests to rebuild strength around the injured area.
  • Hot and cold  therapy - As the name suggests, this form of rehabilitation involves alternating between hot and cold application to the injured area. This is used to reduce swelling by promoting vasodilation during heat therapy and vasoconstriction during cold therapy. An example is a repeating cycle of first immersing the injured area in an ice  then taking a hot shower.
  •  drugs (e.g. Ibuprofen) - These provide short-term pain relief by reducing the swelling associated with injury. They act by stimulating the release of chemicals resulting in vasodilation of blood vessels surrounding the injured area. However, it is important to allow the natural defensive response of the body to reduce initial swelling.
  •  - At an amateur level, this is reserved for serious injuries that cannot be rehabilitated by more conventional methods. In elite sport, it is often performed on lesser injuries as it speeds up the process of rehabilitation compared to other methods. This is important because absence from sport is detrimental to the business, as time is money.
