Lifestyle choices is a term used to describe how a person chooses to live their life; for example, whether a person decides to smoke, drink alcohol, exercise or eat a balanced diet. A major factor for health problems is whether a person leads a sedentary lifestyle.

A sedentary lifestyle is a lifestyle which consists of little or no in day-to-day life. It is often mistaken that one hour at the gym or a one-hour run means that you are not sedentary. However, this is not true; one hour of exercise does not un-do the other 23 hours that you have spent being sedentary.

Therefore, it is important to lead a physically active lifestyle where possible throughout the day, every day. For example, having an commute to and from work or school (e.g. cycling), going for a walk at lunch time and doing chores around the home (e.g. gardening) will all help to reduce living a sedentary lifestyle. It is important to minimise the time spent being sedentary as it can lead to increased risks of diseases and conditions such as . This is defined as having large body fat content, caused by an imbalance of calories consumed to energy expended; it is characterised by a of over 30 or over 20% height:weight ratio.
