Friends can be described as a notable example of how tastes and reactions to a piece of media can evolve over time, and how important factors can be in influencing opinions. Friends remains very popular, even among younger demographics who won’t have for the 1990s, but it has also been re-evaluated through a contemporary lens.

As a  comedy, Friends is grounded in  subject matters of relationships, workplace drama, the inevitable conflicts of living with , and so on. Other aspects, however, may not be as relatable to audiences – particularly those outside of the time and place that the show was first broadcast in.

Friends has been criticised for a lack of in its core cast, particularly given that the show is set in , which is one of the most diverse cities in the entire world. This lack of representation of people of colour and other ethnicities beyond  limits how relatable the show can be to viewers from these backgrounds.

Time has also changed how relatable the show can be. In the , it may not have been unreasonable for a group of 20-somethings with fairly normal to be able to rent such large apartments in the heart of a city. But in the 2020s, these properties would be extremely and only available to the very wealthy. In the show, Monica mentions that rent is 200 dollars a month – in 2018, it was estimated by CNBC that it would be in the region of over $4,500 per month.

There are also choices that have gone out of  in contemporary sitcoms, notably the that underscores jokes and comedic moments. More recent shows such as The Big Bang Theory or Two and a Half Men among others have continued to use this device, but to some viewers and critics it has become viewed as a crutch to prop up weak writing and unfunny jokes.
