An entire market can be subdivided up into smaller chunks called segments.  This process of segmentation can occur for many groups and is used to help businesses identify who their customers are and to target promotions and advertising directly to those customers, e.g. customers who might buy a caravan might respond to an advert in Caravan Weekly magazine.

is segmentation by the year or group of years of the population, e.g. motorbikes or cruises for customers in their 50s

is segmentation by sex, e.g. beard oil for men with beards

is segmentation based on pay scale or salary, e.g. own-label supermarket products aimed at customers on low wages

is segmentation based on the customer's interests, e.g. cycling shops or fishing tackle shops

is segmentation based on what part of the world the customer was originally from, e.g. halal or kosher food

is segmentation based on the career of the customer, e.g. ready meals for shift workers

is segmentation based on the way in which a person lives, e.g. high-fashion shops selling designer clothes
