Using fermentation

When microorganisms respire without  it’s called fermentation.

We use this knowledge to make food, drinks and other useful products.

is a single-celled organism that we use to make bread and alcoholic drinks.

The word equation for fermentation in this organism is:

glucose → ethanol +

To make  bakers mix yeast with flour and water to make a dough.

The yeast breaks down the carbohydrates in the  to glucose and ferments the glucose into its products.

The carbon dioxide forms bubbles in the  and makes it rise. When it is baked the  evaporates and the live yeast is killed.

This fermentation process is also used to make other foods such as pizzas and doughnuts.

To make beer and wine, the yeast is added to barley or grapes and water, and it ferments the natural sugars. The carbon dioxide bubbles away into the air.
