There are more reasons behind fitness tests other than the excuse to put participants through their paces. Below are several real reasons why fitness testing is used in sport:

  • Initial testing provides data which can be used to draw with all future retests. This can show whether fitness is improving as the performer progresses with their training programme.
  • The results from tests can help to inform the design of the training . For example, if a performer received the ratings in the table below on fitness tests for a range of components, training may focus the most on improving and least on improving
Component of fitness Aerobic endurance Speed Agility Coordination
Rating Excellent Below average Above average Good
  • The results of retests at different stages of the programme can also show whether that programme is . Say, for example, after three weeks of training the fitness results don't improve in the retest, then  should probably be made. If fitness results do improve, the performer should  with their current training as it is proving effective.
  • Fitness test results can also give the performer something to for. For example, improving the rating of a fitness component from average to excellent will give the performer the  they need to see their training programme out to their fullest potential.
  • Fitness tests results may also give the performer direction for goal-. This should follow the SMARTER principles so that improvements are as likely as possible to improve an individual's  in their sport.
