Clothing and footwear for sports and physical activities are essential aspects to participation. Many sports and activities require participants to dress a certain way for participation, with some allowances to cater for the different physical or cultural requirements of participants. These guidelines are stated in the rules and of different sports, as set by national bodies.

Clothing

The clothing worn by participants will vary for different sports and activities, but also between training and competition. This may be different for some sporting competitions such as test cricket, where it is easy to distinguish between the batting and teams, and, therefore, all players can dress in whites. Clothing will also vary depending on where the activity takes place. When participating  in activities like gym and fitness classes, many participants will wear breathable clothing that allows produced from the skin to escape. This prevents participants from overheating during such activities and becoming fatigued. Clothing for outdoor participation is dictated by the conditions. For example, participants may wear breathable clothing in warm conditions, but may adopt windproof clothing in windy conditions, or clothing when participating in the rain in order to stay dry.

Footwear
