The conditions you live in have a huge impact on your physical and mental wellbeing. Different aspects of the environment can promote health, as well as posing considerable risks. For instance, living in an area with high levels of air raises the risk of many health problems, such as stroke, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive disease (COPD). This is a significant concern in many major cities, and is caused largely by from road traffic, that contain toxic substances such as nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide.

The conditions of where you live also influence health and wellbeing, and many people live near to some element of the environment that is particularly loud, such as a busy road or an airport. Repeated exposure to excessive noise can also cause chronic stress, affect the amount of an individual gets, and even contribute towards physical health conditions such as diabetes.

Aspects of an individual’s housing situation are also important, as having a safe and hygienic home is beneficial in many ways. Homes which are damp and mouldy can worsen problems, such as asthma, and irritate conditions, such as eczema. Additionally, insufficient heating can increase the risk of pneumonia. Groups particularly at risk include very young children and the .

The location of one’s home is also relevant. People living in a location are more likely to breathe in cleaner, less polluted air, and may be more able to access fresh and locally grown produce. However, people in these locations may find it harder to services if they live a long way from amenities.
