Weathering and Erosion

Rocks are always being broken down by the wind and rain, by chemicals, and by plants and . We call this process  and it takes place , that is to say, the broken-down material stays where it is.  weathering happens mainly because the temperature changes and is even more effective when there is  around. When water freezes in cracks in the rock, which we call freeze-thaw weathering, the crack , and the rock is weakened. The repeated expansion and contraction of rocks – for example, in the desert – can cause layers to peel off in a process known as weathering. Another type of weathering occurs when the rain reacts with  to form new minerals. This is called chemical weathering. The three different types are solution, hydrolysis, and . Finally, there is  weathering which occurs when the roots of  force their way into joints in the rock or when burrowing animals like  dig up the ground to make their homes.
