Coastal Processes

Waves do three kinds of work. First, they break down the coast, a process which we call . This could be , when the sheer force of the waves weakens rocks and removes loose material. Or it could be , which is when the damage is done by beach material being hurled at the cliffs. It could also be , which is when beach material is broken down into smaller, rounder pieces as it bashes into other fragments of beach material. Finally, there is , which is when certain types of rock dissolve. Loose beach material is then moved along the coastline in a process known as . It travels in a zigzag pattern influenced by the  wind. The process whereby beach material is dragged along the seabed is called  but if the beach material is held up in the water we call this . Finally, when the waves run out of energy  occurs when the beach material comes to rest on the seabed or on the beach.
