Goal-setting is important for ambition in sport and striving to be the best performer you can be.

The SMARTER principle is a useful acronym for key characteristics of effective goal-setting:

S The performer must tailor goals towards aspects that are relevant to their sport/activity, or role within that activity.
M - The goal should be quantifiable in some way to monitor progression towards achieving it.
A - The goal should be discussed with a significant other who knows the performer well, before it is confirmed.
R - The goal should be within reach of the performer, in respect to their current situation.
T - Time- The performer should set out to achieve the goal within a given time frame, to ensure they are motivated for the duration.
E The goal should avoid tedium by providing a fun element, such as a reward for achievement.
- Information relating to the goal and its progress should be noted down to reflect upon.

Not only can goal-setting help with ambition, but it can also be used to control . Abiding by the SMARTER principles above can provide less stress for the performer and less doubt in their abilities. For example, the principle will give the performer confidence when they are able to achieve their goals, and the principle ensures that they receive a second opinion from someone who understands the performer's situation and needs.
