Energy is measured in (kcal), found in the food we eat. The recommended dietary intake for the average male is  kcal per day, while  kcal per day is recommended for the average female. However, different performers have different energy needs based on a number of factors:

  • – teenagers require calories than children due to the increased rate, up to a point when muscle mass begins to decline in late adulthood
  •  – females typically require  calories than males, due to a lower muscle mass in the average female
  • Lifestyle – those with an lifestyle require calories than those who lead a lifestyle, due to the increased energy  during exercise

Consuming a diet which results in a greater energy intake than expenditure will result in an energy surplus. This unused, excess energy will be stored as , which may lead to over time if an individual is regularly in an energy surplus.
