Othello was originally written as a , as it was intended only for public performance. The first published edition was in the form of a , an inexpensive format. After Shakespeare died, his plays were published together in , which was meant to acknowledge his importance to the world of literature. The play Othello has few  but often relies on character actions, such as when Othello strikes Desdemona with the  he is holding in Act 4 Scene 1 or when Desdemona provides her own cue by telling the audience that she is on her  in Act 4 Scene 2.
