Some of the other roles of (NGBs) in sport:

1. Developing policies and initiatives
  • NGBs must ensure that everything is being done in terms of education, raising  and imposing sanctions on doping in sport. UK (UKAD) works alongside NGBs to put these policies and initiatives into place; for example, British Swimming displays its anti-doping rules on its website and provides links to the World Anti-Doping Code so that athletes are aware of their responsibility.
  • NGBs must lead by example by promoting etiquette and fair play; for example, the Football Association (FA) has  Fair Play (FFP) regulations in place to prevent money from taking excessive control over football.
  • NGBs ensure that attention is paid to grassroots sport by contributing to the development of programmes in the . For example, British Cycling launched the Places to Ride programme in 2018 in order to provide funding for organisations to make minor improvements to facilities dedicated to cycling. The overall aim is to inspire people to take up cycling and consequently improve the cohesion of local communities.
  • NGBs also dedicate policies to safeguarding and provide this information for local clubs. For example, British Gymnastics has a safeguarding and compliance page on its website, which provides links to various documents that will assist clubs and centres in safeguarding their participants; these include safeguarding procedures, incident report forms, and health and guidance.
2. Providing , insurance and technical guidance
  • guidance – the England Cricket Board (ECB) provides information on how to maintain quality cricket surfaces and what to do in the event of flooding.
  • Liability to cover legal defence costs should a claim be made in the event of a player-on-player injury.
  • A wide range of other support, such as information on how to get involved in the sport – the FA has an entire section on this on its website, for players, coaches and referees.
3. Funding NGBs for funding by putting forward their proposals and adverts on how funding will be put to good use. NGBs may receive funding from a variety of sources, such as grants, through memberships and subscriptions, and from private or fundraising activities. It is then distributed across the sport as a whole, from the development of facilities to the running of education programmes and campaigns.
