Sporting etiquette is a term used to describe the rules in sport that are upheld to respect the of play. It can be displayed by both performers and spectators in many different ways. For example, a rugby performer may display etiquette by respecting the referee's decision and apologising for any foul play, whereas a rugby spectator may display etiquette by remaining silent when an opposition player is kicking a goal.

There are various reasons why players and spectators may display this behaviour, including the following:

  • Using the example of the rugby player who has committed unintentional foul play, etiquette can be used to promote such as  play. For example, they could do this by admitting to committing the foul, apologising to the opposing player and the referee for their action, and taking care that they don't repeat the offence in future.
  • Using the example of the rugby spectator, etiquette can be used to promote the of competition by respecting the silence of the opposition's goal kicking.
  • If a player were to abandon sporting etiquette, they would be running the risk of tarnishing the of themselves or the sport. Therefore, etiquette could maintain the positive messages that are portrayed by that sport to the wider world.
  • Bad behaviour in sport may pose a threat to the opponent and increase the risk of injury. By observing etiquette, this risk is reduced, contributing to the of other participants.
  • At the elite level, when millions of people around the world may be watching a given sporting event, it is particularly important to display etiquette since the performer will be acting as a to many aspiring performers.

In addition to sporting etiquette, certain behaviours can be promoted through initiatives which aim to break down in sport. A prime example is the initiative Kick It Out (originally called Let's Kick Out of Football), which aims to remove any against underrepresented groups in football and in sport in general.
