The most imposing barrier that people who work or have family commitments face to participation in sport is a lack of . Some workers who have routine shifts may see this as an opportunity to schedule in regular sport and activity around their shifts. Even then, many activities, such as exercise classes, may be scheduled during the , which will present an obstacle for someone working a typical nine-to-five job. For others working on a rota, it might be a lot more difficult to plan sport and activity around work due to changing shift patterns.

A lack of time not only reduces the amount of time available to participate in sport and physical activity, but it also reduces the time available to search for activities  in the area, leading to a lack of awareness of activities that are available. 

Another barrier to sports participation that workers are likely to face is low levels of energy. Working long hours can be both physically and mentally draining depending on the type of work, leaving little  to participate in sport outside of working hours.

To overcome the restrictions placed on sports participation due to work or having family commitments, fitness centres could schedule exercise classes at different during the day, such as in the evening for day workers or whenever someone has time away from family commitments. 

To promote awareness of available activities, sports providers could target workplaces with to increase the visibility of activities. There are also many initiatives that local health and fitness centres put in place to act as incentives to sign up for a membership, such as corporate discounts and memberships for couples.

An initiative that workplaces may wish to organise is granting an allotted time each day or week for physical activity in the workplace. This will provide a solution to the lack of energy that might be preventing participation outside of working hours and may also be effective at increasing in the workplace. People with family commitments may also seek opportunities to participate in physical activity and sport while supervising, such as taking family members for a .
