In an ascending Chromatic scale starting on D, the first note would be D. The fourth note, , comes just before F#, and the ninth note  comes just before B. Upon reaching C, the scale turns around and comes back down. After  semitones, we hear A, and another four semitones later, we reach  on our way back down to D.


Another passage of music has three short chromatic scales, each with six notes. The first scale starts on F# and goes down, ending on . The second begins on and descends before finishing on Eb. The third begins on C, and gets in pitch, finishing on F six notes later.
