Nationalism as a unified sense of identity still remains strong in the world of sport, where countries often compete in international sporting events.  In education, the language of instruction and priorities set by governments, such as the teaching of values and shared history and culture, are also a unifying force.  Migration has led this to become more complex as many people may have  identities based on their place of residence and birth and the national identities of their parents or grandparents.  This has also become more complex as companies producing goods which may be recognised as being British may well be owned by a foreign TNC, such as the supermarket chain  which was previously bought by US retail giant and subsequently by the British-Indian firm Issa brothers. Another example is the chocolate company  which is owned by the US food company .  Even within a country identities may be contested, with independence movements in the UK led by the SNP in  and in the Spanish region of  – with both of them having had independence referendums.
