A range of intervention techniques are used in countries that need development aid or are in breach of human rights.  For example, humanitarian crises resulting from war or a natural disaster may lead countries to offer direct financial assistance to help the affected country to recover.  An example of this was the US help in the 2010 earthquake in the Caribbean island of  where one of the impacts of the earthquake was the collapse of a large proportion of buildings in the island capital .  The island's infrastructure was also badly damaged, including the airport  which meant that planes with food and medical aid couldn't land.  Intervention for this disaster also came from a range of NGOs, including , who fundraise and also distribute aid and support communities on the ground.  IGOs such as  also offer assistance through grants and loans which can be used to reconstruct key infrastructure, such as transport, energy supplies and hospitals to assist countries in rehabilitation.  Development aid has benefits in terms of fighting diseases such as  which are problematic in developing countries and form part of the seventeen targets set by the United Nations known as the .  Critics, however, explore the notion that development aid can lead to  meaning countries are trapped in a relationship with other countries where their long-term economic transition to manufacturing and service industries is hindered by the type of aid and assistance countries and IGOs are willing to offer.
