One of the key beliefs in Islam is that Allah is – that he loves and cares for humanity, especially his followers. It is a combination of these beliefs about the nature of Allah that poses a – what is known as the problem of evil and . Muslims believe that Allah is compassionate, (which means all-powerful) and (which means all-knowing). Here lies the problem:

  • if Allah is all-knowing, then he knows about evil and suffering
  • if Allah is all-powerful, then he would stop evil and suffering
  • if Allah is compassionate, then he would want to stop evil and suffering.

But yet – evil and continue to exist. There is an inconsistency here – it doesn’t follow that all of these statements can be simultaneously true. This is known as the of evil and suffering. It is a philosophical problem that is prominent in the majority of religious schools of thought, and Islam is no different.
