harmony is an ideal for many people in society – and Muslims are no exception to this rule.

Teaching on this topic for Muslims is largely considered to come from one of the most important hadiths in Islam. The hadiths are the of the , so while these are not found within the Qur'an (which is considered to be the word of ), they are very important as a source of authority.

This important hadith is known as the Sermon, given at Mount Arafat on Muhammad's pilgrimage of Hajj. During this sermon, Muhammad is believed to have promoted harmony within society – including harmony both between the genders and between different . Specifically reflecting the idea that all humans were made equal by Allah, the hadith states that, 'All of your are from Adam, and Adam from the ground', referencing the Islamic idea of creation and of as the first man.

This idea that all men are from one Adam would communicate that all humanity is unified in origin and, therefore, should treat each other equally, underlining racial harmony.

British Muslims today make up just over 4% of the total population (as of 2017) and so it is clear that by living in Britain, they are living in a multicultural society as a minority. One important benefit of living in a multi-ethnic society for Muslims is much the same as that for those of other faiths – the opportunity to widen their experience of the world and their knowledge of people from other beliefs and cultures.
