The word '' (which actually means struggle) is often misunderstood to mean a holy war. While the form of jihad does justify violence or struggle to protect the faith, the actual term for a holy war in Islam is .There is a variety of important Surahs in the Holy which dictate how Muslims should go about a holy war. These include emphasising the importance of pursuing peace and only choosing violence as a last resort. For example, Surah :61 states that, 'And if they [the enemy] include to peace then incline to it, and reply upon Allah'. However, there are Qur'anic verses which appear to sanction violence, including Surah :1–14 which states, 'And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them'. However, even though this passage does appear to sanction , it does stipulate that 'if they should repent, establish prayer and give zakah, let them go on their way. Indeed, Allah is forgiving and merciful'.
