 is a union between two people in a romantic partnership which is considered to ideally be for . Marriage is considered to be very important in Islam, as it is viewed as a cornerstone of society. 

Islam views marriage as a  between a husband and wife which agrees that they will live their lives together. This is known as a  contract. The purpose of an Islamic marriage is for both partners to remain faithful to each other for  and to provide an environment for  to be raised in the Muslim faith. 

Teaching on the importance of marriage in Islam can be found in the  including: 

  • Surah :1–24, which contains teaching that men are 'created from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women'
  • Surah :30–34, which contains teaching that believing men should 'reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts'

While Muslims may view marriage in this way, the majority of society now hold a view of marriage, which has becoming increasingly more secular over the last 50 years. 

In the Qur'an, marriage of one man to more than one woman is permitted - this is known as and was practised by the Prophet. However, it is stipulated that the husband must be able to treat the wives justly. Women are only permitted to have husband. Polygamy as a practice is illegal in the United Kingdom regardless of the religious background of the people involved.
