Agility refers to the quick and precise movement or change in while maintaining balance and without losing . It is an important component of fitness in many team sports that require players to perform high-, multidirectional running. is a method of training designed to incorporate these short, sharp, multidirectional movements into sport-specific drills. For example, a rugby player would engage in drills where they simulate receiving the ball and running at the defence, performing a down-up to mimic the tackle, before changing direction to get back into position. Additionally, the end-to-end nature of a basketball game transfers into training drills, where players use the court lines to perform repeated shuttles and, in turn, improve their agility in the game.

time is the period of time between a  and the initiation of the response. It can be applied in many sporting situations that require an individual to react to their immediate surroundings. It can be in the form of an  stimulus, such as the starting gun in the 100 m sprint, or a  stimulus, such as a serve return in tennis. In order to train reaction time, the following equipment can be used:

  • A stopwatch to record time and monitor improvements.
  • An auditory stimulus – Instead of having a simple stimulus–response relationship, it would be beneficial to use a range of different sounds that initiate different responses.
  • A visual stimulus – As well as the variation within auditory stimuli, adding variation by using visual stimuli can also enhance the effectiveness of training. A common method is to employ a traffic light system, altering the meaning of red, amber and green indicators to improve the stimulus–response .
  • A  ball is a small hexagonal object with uneven edges, making any bounce unpredictable, and it thus challenges the individual's response to the direction it chooses to take.
