Goal-setting is used by athletes and coaches to provide direction towards achieving short- and long-term objectives. This can be done in various ways, which we will explore below.
Setting goals can improve an individual's to a training programme. By having something to aim for, an individual is more likely to buy into the training process and stay on track with the frequency and intensity of training prescribed. For example, a bodybuilder aiming to reach a body fat of under 10% is likely to complete their training schedule than if they didn't specify this goal.
Another reason why goals are set is that they act as to spur the athlete on to reaching their goals. For example, a middle-distance runner who sets a goal to complete 5 km in under 20 minutes would aim to complete each kilometre within 4 minutes. If they are running slightly over this pace, then they would have an added desire to improve their speed. However, if they didn't set this goal, they would be likely to monitor their pace and thus to complete 5 km in their target time.
Thirdly, goal-setting can be used to improve and/or performance. A gymnast who sets a goal of scoring a perfect 10 in their floor routine will use this to improve their performance. For example, they are likely to take on feedback from previous attempts into their upcoming attempt in order to improve their chance of scoring perfect 10. Although they might still improve their performance in successive attempts if they didn't specify this goal, their performance is less likely to be .
