The of an ecosystem, which can be as small as a tree or a pond, or as large as the Earth, measures the variety and number of organisms in a region, and may consider the range of (places where organisms live) that are available. An index of diversity takes into account species , which is the number of species in a community, and species , which indicates whether there are roughly equal numbers of individuals of different species. As well as this, diversity measures the number of polymorphic gene loci in a species.

Conservation aims to preserve species and habitats while maintaining a high biodiversity. This is often achieved by conserving species in their normal habitat, called conservation. However, conservation, which protects species outside their natural habitat, is perhaps more visible. Examples of this include , where collections of animals are cared for and bred in captivity, and , which store samples of seeds over long periods.

In order to estimate the diversity of species in an area without collecting data from every individual, samples need to be taken. sampling is any form of sampling which attempts to minimise bias. It usually involves the use of , square frames which can be placed on the ground in order to count the species present within. Other forms of sampling are structured to collect a specific set of information. Examples include:

  • sampling, where decisions are made to deliberately sample some areas that contain a certain species
  • sampling, which divides the sampling area into different sections and samples them separately
  • sampling, which records data at fixed intervals along a line

  • This is your 1st attempt! You get 3 marks for each one you get right. Good luck!
