  • Calculate Rf values for each substance
  • Add a small spot of each substance to the pencil line
  • Allow the paper to dry
  • Place the chromatography paper in a beaker of solvent with the pencil line above the solvent
  • Draw a pencil line near the bottom of the chromatography paper
  • Wait until the solvent has soaked upwards through most of the paper
  • Measure the distance travelled by the solvent and each substance
