  • The doping control officer notifies the athlete that they have been selected for testing and arrives at the whereabouts location provided by the athlete.
  • Any sanctions issued are determined based on the test result and certain decision criteria.
  • Once back at the lab, the sample is divided into two so that it can be retested if required.
  • Once the sample has been taken, the athlete and the doping control officer sign a declaration form to certify the sample taken.
  • The sample is tested to detect the presence of any banned substance, a list of which is publicly available on the WADA website.
  • The whereabouts rule is where the elite athlete informs the governing anti-doping body of a place where they can be found within a 60-minute time slot each day.
  • The governing anti-doping body notifies a local doping control officer of the athlete selected for testing and the testing method by which they will draw the sample.
  • The doping control officer takes either a blood, urine, hair or nail sample and is supervised by a chaperone to ensure that the sample taken is not tampered with.
