  • It would seem, then, that the sugar tax has reduced the overall amount of sugar in drinks although there are exceptions. But is this something we think about when buying a fizzy beverage?  And do we know what has replaced the sugar?
  • In the end the best option is to replace at least some fizzy drinks with water and treat the tempting fizzy sodas as a treat only.


  • Aspartame, the most commonly used artificial sweetener has been linked to an increased incidence of cancer or stroke but the research is far from conclusive.  Reducing sugar certainly reduces type two diabetes but it is not yet clear what risks the alternatives might carry.
  • In 2018 a tax was placed on sugary drinks. Any drink with more than 5 g of sugar in every 100 ml would cost more, with the extra money going to the government as tax. The aim was to reduce obesity by encouraging us to buy healthier options and manufacturers to reduce the amount of sugar in their drinks.
  • Manufacturers acted quickly to avoid having to raise the price of their drinks.  They reduced the sugar conted to below 5mg.  Some famous brands have not reduced the sugar but instead have relied on their famous names to ensure we are happy to pay a few more pence for them.

  • Many people think that buying low or zero sugar drinks is a healthier choice and there is evidence that this can reduce obesity but the artificial sweeteners used instead of sugar may not be as healthy as we think.
