The writer has used animal imagery to suggest that Fletcher behaves more like an animal than a human. We get a clear picture of the mess that surrounds him, and of his unkempt appearance.
The personification of the screen symbolises the power that it has over him. It watches but does not aid him in any way. There is an implication that it is waiting for him to start writing.
This simile suggests that he is not wholly human. It shows the speed at which inspiration hits him, and suggests that he reacts to things spontaneously.
This analogy describes how he is moving but also suggests that he has a fiery temper. He has an extreme reaction to his emotions and there is the suggestion that he always reacts in this way.
This metaphor shows that the room is disorganised and suggests the vast number of books that are piled up. The implication that he is trapped works literally, due to the mess, but also suggests that he can't escape from the blank screen.
