Mrs Lyons makes it seem as though Mrs Johnstone giving her one of the twins is the right thing to do. It is the 'perfect' solution.
We see here that Mrs Lyons has successfully played on Mrs Johnstone's empathy.
Mrs Lyons reasons with Mrs Johnstone here and makes it seem as though she will not be giving up her baby because she would still see him every day. We know that Mrs Lyons is not a truthful character and so we doubt this promise.
Her use of repetition shows her excitement and adds to the persuasive tone in her speech.
As well as Mrs Lyons' words, Mrs Johnstone is persuaded by her comparative wealth and the easy life she thinks her baby will have with Mrs Lyons.
Mrs Lyons has got the whole scenario planned out almost immediately. We see here how she plans to lie to her husband; she doesn't even consider telling him the truth, she may be afraid he would say no, but she is clearly manipulative.
Mrs Lyons uses another persuasive technique when she begs Mrs Johnstone to agree. She is obviously desperate for a child and we feel sorry for her, but her means of getting what she wants shows not just desperation but also manipulation.
Mrs Lyons turns Mrs Johnstone's words against her here in order to persuade her to agree to what she wants. This makes it very difficult for Mrs Johnstone to argue against her.
Mrs Lyons also tries to persuade Mrs Johnstone by threatening her with something she knows Mrs Johnstone is worried about. Again she is using Mrs Johnstone's words against her.
Mrs Lyons creates a poignant image of how desperate she is to have a child. Again, we do feel sorry for her but she is obviously playing on Mrs Johnstone's sympathy to get her own way.
