Ledger Lines
When we go higher or lower than the standard five lines on the stave, we need to add extras to show the correct notes.
These lines are called ledger lines.
Ledger Lines
These are short lines which extend the range of the stave either higher or lower, allowing us to use more notes.
Each note will have its own ledger line.


If we write a melody using lots of ledger lines, it gets quite hard to read.
When this happens we have two choices:
Option 1
Use an 8va/8vb sign which tells us to play these notes one octave higher (8va) or one octave lower (8vb)


... becomes this!
These two examples are played in exactly the same way.
Option 2
Change the clef that we are using.


When we change the clef, we can avoid using lots of ledger lines.
