Ornament
In music an ornament is a decoration or an addition to the music to make it sound more interesting. It is also a way of more easily expressing a set of common note patterns rather than writing them out in full every time.
Acciaccaturas (Grace Notes)
An acciaccatura or grace note indicates that you should play the little note as quickly as possible and it leads into the big note. In this case the acciaccatura is a semitone below the note it leads to, but it can be any note.
Note the little line crossed through - it is important not to get it mixed up with an appoggiatura!
Appoggiaturas
Turns
A turn is a symbol above a note that means to play four notes in place of the one note, starting with the note above or the note below, depending on whether it is a regular turn or an inverted turn.
Mordents
A mordent signifies that you should, in quick succession, play a note, then the note above or below, then back to the original note.
Trills
Trills can be played in different ways. Above it says that the trill should start on the note, but in music older than about 200 years ago trills would normally start on the note above. Also sometimes a trill is finished off with a turn. For this reason you will often find the trill written out in full in a tiny bar printed below the music, or sometimes a book of music will have a page showing all the trills at the beginning.
