Minor Scales
There are two key facts to know about minor keys:
- A minor key has the same key signature as the major key that is three semitones higher
- A minor key has the 7th note raised up a semi-tone
Example (C minor)
Harmonic Minor
Note that most people learn about the Harmonic Minor which is what we have just covered. Next we will cover the Melodic Minor.
This is the melodic minor which is different on the way down from the way up. What you need to know to understand is that on the way up it is the same as C major except with a flattened (minor) 3rd, but then on the way down it is exactly the same notes as Eb major.
So on the way down it is the same as the harmonic minor, except that the 7th is also flattened, making a minor 7th.
Note that the Bb and Ab on the way down don't need to be shown because they are in the key signature, but they are shown to remind the musician that they were not flat in the last bar but they are now.
