During their lifespan, individuals develop cognitively and their intellect grows. This means that they their ability to understand their world and organise their ideas.
There are five important things they need to develop to improve their abilities. These are:

- Problem-solving
- Memory

During infancy and early , there are stages of rapid intellectual development. This is because the brain grows rapidly during the first few years of life. Between the ages of two and five is when the fastest learning takes place for most children. This is because speech and develop rapidly during this time. All the basics of vocabulary, grammar and sentence formation have been learnt by the time a child is .
During adolescence to early adulthood, there is development of logical thought, problem-solving and recall skills. During middle adulthood, intellectual development focuses on making sound using life experiences. This helps individuals to understand and make decisions about complex situations. They may use these skills every day in their job roles. Towards the end of this life stage, however, there may be a gradual in the speed of processing information. Although new brain cells can be made at any age, this process slows down during later adulthood, and physiological changes can cause malfunctions in activity. It can take an older person longer to learn and recall information. However, participating in activities can help to maintain our abilities.
