The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the main independent of health and social care for England. It aims to ensure that services meet quality and safety and provide a high level of care to members of the public. To achieve this, all health and social care services must with the CQC; otherwise, they would be breaking the law. These include private nursing homes, home care provider agencies, GP surgeries and dental clinics.
After a care service is registered, the CQC will regularly monitor this provision through and reviewing feedback from service users and their family and friends. Each inspection visit takes anywhere between two and five hours and involves care and talking to care staff and people who use the service. After an inspection, each care service is awarded a rating, such as ‘outstanding’, ‘good’, ‘requires improvement’ or ‘inadequate’ in an inspection .
If a care setting does not meet the necessary standards, the CQC has the ability to make improvements by placing the service in ‘special measures’; it can also give out or even start prosecution proceedings. As an example, a care setting could receive a penalty of £300 for failing to provide documents or information.
