There are three ways to  accesschangeneedtake care services. These are called methods of  remedyreferralrefundredundancy.

  • Self-referral is when a person asks for the service. As an example, GP services can be obtained by people who have  registeredreferredrenouncedissued with their local surgery.
  • A  professorpropertyprecursorprofessional referral involves a care worker arranging for a person to receive the service. For example, GPs sometimes refer their patients to hospital services where they will see a  cookconsultantconductorconnector who might perform day surgery. This is when an operation can be provided in a way that does not require a stay in hospital.
  • Another example involves social workers, who carry out an  annualassessmentarithmeticassistance of a client’s needs, and then may refer them to services such as housing support, day centres or health services. These health services could include community  nursingnanniesnurseriesnuns that offers injections, changes the dressing on wounds and monitors health through visits to patients in their own homes.
When a person is put in contact with a service by a  relationshiprelevantrelativereligion, friend or neighbour, this is called a third-party referral. For example, an elderly woman’s daughter might telephone the social services department to refer her mother for a care service.
