Liberalism is an ideology that considers people to be   dependentself-interestedgoodselfish and   trustworthyunreliablerationalirrational. As a result, it seeks to limit the role of the   statesocietycommunitytradition.

There are six core ideas and principles within liberalism. The first is the view that people are independent and unique beings; this is known as   rationalismtoleranceindividualismequality. The second is a belief that people should be able to make their own decisions, known as   equalityfreedomtolerancerationalism. The third is a view that the state is  a necessitya necessary evila fact of lifean unnecessary evil. The fourth is the belief that people are capable of making their own decisions, known as   toleranceequalityrationalismfreedom. The fifth can be subdivided into two parts, the first being a belief that all people are born the same, known as  tolerancesocial justiceequalityrationalism, and the second being the view that rewards and benefits should be fairly distributed, known as  social justicetolerancerationalismequality. The sixth and final one is the consideration that a  liberal democracyconstitutional democracysocial democracyfree democracy is the best form of government.
