Conservatism can be divided into   threetwosixseven main branches. These have emerged as responses to changing circumstances mostly relating to the rise and success of other ideologies. 

Traditional conservatism is the oldest form. It arose as a response to the Enlightenment and its   pragmaticradicalliberalmodern ideas. It sought instead to protect the status quo as much as possible. In many ways it is the most conservative of the branches.

One-nation conservatism was the next branch to develop. It was primarily a reaction to the rise of   empiresrevolutionsliberalismfree market capitalism in the nineteenth century, which was blamed for damaging   societyeconomypowertradition because it encouraged people to pursue their own interests.

The New Right is the latest form of conservatism. It marks a greater departure from the other branches. It developed as a response to the increasing acceptance and popularity of   pragmaticradicalmodernliberal ideas. These ideas were becoming the new status quo, which is something that   conservatismpragmatismliberalismtradition always aims to preserve as far as possible. The New Right particularly rejected the socialist notion of  societyfreedomthe welfare stateclass, aiming instead to offer a different route.
