Electrolysis is a method used to convert ions in  a compounda polymera solidan aqueous solution into pure  acidshalideselementssalts. Two rods, called electrodes, are inserted into the  watergroundelectrolytefire, and the ions move to the electrode with the opposite  pressurechargepolaritymaterial. At the electrodes, the ions are  dischargeddeionisedmagnetisedcooled.

When a molten salt is electrolysed, the metal is produced at the  red electrodecathodeelectronpositive electrode and the non-metal is produced at the  anodeblue electrodenegative electrodeproton. This process can be used to extract metals from their ores. One example of this is when aluminium is extracted from a mixture of aluminium oxide and  lyocritea hydrocarbonpotassium carbonatecryolite.

Aqueous solutions can also be electrolysed, but OH⁻ and  O²⁻S⁺H⁺Na⁺ ions are also present due to the water. If the metal is  more solublemore concentratedmore volatilemore reactive than hydrogen, then  a metal oxidehydrogena metal carbonatethe metal is produced at the negative electrode.  WaterHydroxideSodiumOxygen is produced at the positive electrode, unless the non-metal is a halide, in which case  a halogenoalkanea halidona halogenan alcohol is produced.

Electrolysis involves oxidation and  hydrogenationreductioncondensationdeoxidation reactions, which can be represented using  ionicatomichalfpositron-equations.
