A simple model of an atom includes a central  protonnucleusneutronnucleon containing  mesonselectronsionsprotons and neutrons. This is orbited by  electronsmuonsphotonsprotons.

An atom which has lost or gained  neutrinosenergyprotonselectrons to become charged is called an ion.
Two or more nuclei that have the same number of  neutronsionsprotonsphotons but different numbers of  photonsneutronsionsprotons are called isotopes.
The nucleus is held together with the  fundamentalshort-rangeweakstrong nuclear force. This is attractive up to a range of  3 fm0.5 fm2 fm0.2 fm and repulsive below ranges of  2 fm0.5 fm3 fm0.2 fm. Because of this odd behaviour, some nuclei are unstable.
Some unstable nuclei undergo beta-minus decay. This is where  a quarka protona neutrona photon turns into  a neutrona protona photona quark by releasing  a positrona photonan electrona quark.
Other unstable nuclei undergo alpha decay. This is where the mass of the nucleus decreases because it has emitted a  uraniumlighthydrogenhelium nucleus.
