When two waves meet, they undergo a process of interference. Interference can be shown by Young's double slit experiment.
The two thin slits in Young's double slit experiment act as two light sources which produce light which is  monochromaticidenticalcoherentpolarised, meaning that the waves have the same frequency and are travelling in phase.
When light hits the two slits, the light waves  interfere with each otherspread outchange directionget closer together. These waves then propagate to a screen, interfering with each other as they reach the screen. At the screen, a bright or dark fringe is produced depending on the  orientationfrequencypath differenceintensity, which controls how the waves interfere. For longer wavelengths, the bright fringes will  be further apartdisappearnot changebe closer together.
Lasers will often be used for Young's double slit experiment because they provide a strong, monochromatic light. You will likely use lasers that aren't very strong, but you should still take care as these lasers may still cause damage to your  clotheseyesfeelingsskin.
When a wave hits an edge or a gap in an obstacle, it  oscillatesrefractspolarisesdiffracts and spreads out, producing a distinctive pattern when captured on a screen. A screen with many small slits allows this process to occur many times across a wave; this is called  a polarising filtera diffraction gratingan interferometera wave guide and allows different wavelengths to be isolated, so can be used to  polarise lightidentify chemical samplesmeasure refractive indexrecord data.
