K-pop fans have become extremely active on social media, particularly on  SnapchatFacebookInstagramTwitter. Dedicated fans of a group or an artist like BTS, Loona or BLACKPINK have become known (both internally and externally) as 'stans', a slang term that comes from the 2000 track 'Stan' by  House of PainAndre 3000DMXEminem about the deadly obsession of an unhinged fan. Stans for these groups often change their profile pics to their favourite member, and are very involved in online communities as well as rivalries with fan groups.

For the  recordersfilm studiesmusic venuesrecord labels that directly profit from BLACKPINK's popularity, these fan groups and communities are very useful from a commercial perspective. However, some commentators have warned that the level of fanaticism in these online communities can be potentially  pathologicallypsychologicallyphysicallypsychically damaging for those involved, such as being  funnydehumanisinghumanisingconfusing for the performers themselves.

BLACKPINK is the most popular girl group in South Korea and their listener base is mostly comprised of   teenage boysteenage girlsadult menadult women, but their stardom is also international, similar to how Britpop became a worldwide phenomenon in the early 2000s.
