There are benefits to having a motivated workforce. This would include  strikesstaff retentionindustrial actionhigh labour turnover and  low productivityhigh productivityargumentsdissatisfaction

Staff working in a repetitive role on a production line are most likely to be motivated by  payhoursuniformfree lunches, whereas staff working in a sales job are more likely to be paid  overtimesalarywagescommission and motivated to make more sales because of this. 

For some staff, money is not a main motivator and they may be happier to receive regular  breakshourstraininguniform changes which makes them more valuable to their current employer, and would increase their chances of getting a new job in the same industry if they wanted to. Others may be motivated by fringe benefits such as  payhourssalariesfree workwear and  overtimebonusessubsidised mealsmore hours because these reduce the cost to the employee of being at work. Some staff may appreciate the opportunity for more responsibility, as this makes working   shortermore boringmore interestinglonger.
