Waves and Tides

Waves are caused by wind dragging on the surface of the   seabedwatercliffsbeachlongshore driftatmosphere. Some waves grow to a great size because they have a large   fetchvelocitycatchwavelengthsitheel while others are smaller. When they crash on the shore the turbulent water is called the   swishchurnbackdraftswashmixturebackwash while the water that flows back into the sea is called the   reboundswashdraftretreatreturnbackwash. Even when it is calm, the water level is always changing because of the   wave-cut platformerosiontides sea wallsgroynestsunami. These are mainly because   rocketsastronautsthe mooncometsasteroidssatellites attract(s) the sea and pulls it upwards. High tides occur once about every   twotwelve and a halfforty-twoten and a quartersixfour hours meaning that they happen roughly   onceten timesseven timesthree timestwicea hundred times every day. The difference in sea level between the high and low tides is called the tidal   rangegapchasmswelldifferenceopening. The height of each tide is predictable and gets published in tide   recordschartssurgesliststablesmaps which can be bought from newsagents or found published in the local paper in seaside resorts.
